Celebrating and Supporting Our Local Film and Video Community

At Photo Opp, we believe in the power of filmmaking to bring people together, spark conversations, and inspire creativity. Over the past few months, we’ve had the privilege of hosting several sold-out film screenings, highlighting both local and regional talent. These events demonstrate the growing passion for independent cinema in our community—and the need to support and advocate for this thriving creative industry.

Spotlight on Recent Screenings

GOLD: A Documentary of Empowerment

We also had the honor of screening GOLD, a compelling documentary by Paige McKenna that explores the stories of dancers at the Gold Nugget strip club in rural Spread Eagle, WI. The film offers an intimate and empowering look at financial independence, self-love, and reclaiming personal power—told through the experiences of Dusty, a former dancer turned club owner, and the women she hires.

Our October 2024 and February 2025 screenings of GOLD were both SOLD OUT, followed by thought-provoking Q&A sessions with Paige McKenna. The overwhelming support for this film demonstrates the hunger for authentic, locally-rooted storytelling.

FEBRUARY – A Powerful Story of Immigration and Isolation

In January, Photo Opp was proud to host a special screening of FEBRUARY, a beautifully shot film by Nathan Deming. The story follows Miguel (David Duran), a recent immigrant struggling to find his place in a small Wisconsin town. His protective sister (Nayeli Hernandez) and her husband (Erick Inestroza) become concerned when a mysterious man (Ritchie Gordon) offers to take Miguel ice fishing.

Following the screening, we were thrilled to host a filmmaker Q&A with Nathan Deming, moderated by documentary filmmaker Paige McKenna (GOLD: The Documentary). The evening was a tremendous success, with a SOLD OUT crowd of engaged film lovers. Events like these not only showcase powerful storytelling but also foster meaningful dialogue between filmmakers and audiences.

Coming Soon: The Truth Will Set You Free

In May, we’re excited to host a screening of The Truth Will Set You Free, a documentary by local filmmaker Dave Jackson. This screening is already SOLD OUT—a testament to the enthusiasm of our community for homegrown films. Stay tuned for a potential encore screening if you missed out!

Advocating for Wisconsin’s Film Industry

Right now, Wisconsin is 1 of only 13 states without any production incentives, and one of just four without a film office. That means fewer opportunities for young people, fewer creative jobs, and fewer chances to tell our stories here at home.

The passion for filmmaking in Wisconsin is undeniable, but the industry needs more support to thrive. Governor Evers recently proposed a tax credit for Wisconsin movie productions—a game-changer for local filmmakers. If passed, this initiative would provide financial incentives for in-state productions, keeping creative talent and resources within Wisconsin. This doesn't just benefit Milwaukee or Madison, but Appleton and all over the state as well. If you live in Wisconsin, please contact your legislator today and urge them to support this bipartisan initiative.

You can take action by supporting this proposal! Visit Action! Wisconsin to contact your local legislator and voice your support for keeping film incentives in the governor’s budget. This is a direct way YOU can help strengthen and sustain the film industry in our state.

Thank You for Supporting Independent Film

We are incredibly grateful for the community’s enthusiasm and support of the independent film scene. Whether you attended a screening, participated in a Q&A, or simply helped spread the word, you are contributing to the growth of this creative ecosystem.

Stay connected with Photo Opp for future screenings and events—we can’t wait to continue sharing powerful stories and building a stronger film community together.
