Education & the Arts

A local teacher’s journey with Photo Opp, photography, camera kits and students!

As a teacher and photography enthusiast, I was elated to join Photo Opp as a Board Member. I had recently purchased a SLR camera (which is still begging to be used) and I was experimenting with photography in my 5th grade classroom at Columbus Elementary in Appleton. Joining Photo Opp’s board and being involved with connecting education and the arts has been the perfect way to blend two interests (and passions) of mine!

Much to my delight, I am now preparing Photo Opp’s camera kit! The camera kits will be a complete kit which includes the gear, manuals, curriculum, and how-to’s that will allow local educators to bring photography to their classrooms. It has been a different photography experience than my snap-snap photography of my everyday life. I have learned some great vocabulary, such as histogram! I am super excited to get this kit out into the world.

I love watching my students’ decisions about their subject matter. I also love hearing the chatter, while they share their photographs. I love that my experience with photography has grown from everyday photography, to taking pictures to include in a camera kit that will benefit others in our community! Love it!

If you take a look at the photos below, the one to the right is a photo of the moon at Hartman Creek State Park after the Canadian wildfire smoke subsided. I used a 3 second exposure on my iPhone (which I love!). The photo to the left is of the camera kit. Much different photo, but still super fun content!
