Photo Walk: Appleton City Center

A community event for photographers to explore the same space together

On Saturday, March 11, a group of 25 community members gathered at the Appleton Downtown City Center for our first community Photo Walk Event of 2023!

As a group, we explored downtown Appleton’s City Center while taking pictures and talking about taking pictures! Participants walked around the indoor City Center space and were all sent with the same assignment; SHAPES AND LINES.

We had a great range of photographers, from professionals to beginning hobbyists, and plenty of lifelong enthusiasts. There was also a wide range of cameras and old and new technology, the latest cutting-edge tech being used next to a 40-year-old 35mm film camera!

Here are some photos from the participants! I’d say they did a great job and had fun with the theme!

Another photographer that was along for the walk was Nick Dvoracek. Nick is an expert on pinhole photography and took some awesome images with cameras he made out of a cardboard box! We’re running a workshop with Nick on Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day, April 30th.

  • Learn how to use a camera with no lens and no viewfinder

  • Take pictures with your own pinhole camera (to borrow for the day)

  • Assist with developing the film right away

  • You’ll also receive scans of your photos

Click here to register for the workshop! We’re excited to share Nick’s expertise with this. He did a great blog post from this Photo Walk Event too. Here are my favorite photos of his from the day:

Feedback from photo walk participants;

  • “Just the whole thing...shooting with other people who have different cameras and then the social hour afterward. Super cool!”

  • “I enjoyed interacting with other photographers, especially other film photographers. I've always been skeptical of photo walks, but having this pretty sophisticated group working on the same assignment in fairly close proximity was more interesting than I expected.”

  • “I liked getting other photographers together in one location and then setting us free to be creative.”

We do a Photo Walk Event every quarter, our next one will be coming up this summer. Make sure to sign up for our newsletter to know about the next one (ProTip: whitelist info@thephotoopp.org in your email)!!
